Overview of Meeting

Meeting began with a round robin where each person introduced themselves and spoke for a couple of minutes about their research.

The meeting then revolved around three main items:

  • we went through (1) the resolutions from Barcelona and (2) the suggestions from Josep Rodriguez's email to the list and discussed how to proceed with each resolution or suggestion.
  • various people made announcements about projects that they are working on which they would like members of the group to participate in.

Main Resolutions of Meeting

  • book: proceed with book. Nick to write suggested outline for book and email list, as per the resolutions from Barcelona.
  • data archive and software archive: People acknowledged the work of Val and Erica in organising the email survey of the group, but no one knew if people had replied to the survey. Suggestion was that we create pages on our wiki website ( sna.pl/politicsandinterlocks/ ) for both the data archive and the software archive and encourage people to upload their details directly.
  • joint research projects: very little work had happened on this. Eelke reported that their was not much money in the Netherlands and that the place we should target is the European Science Foundation. Lothar will work on developing a unique ID for his dataset of the largest 500 corporations in Europe so as to assist with aggregating data. Reservations were expressed about this because of fears of starting a project without a clear aim, but the general consensus seemed to be that if people start work we will try to clarify goals as we proceed. Few other projects had been followed up, but there was a general sense that the European Science Foundation grant was our best possibility for a large funding grant.
  • Politics and Interlocking directorates group:
    • this was where the most progress had been made
    • email list and website established.
    • we organised this meeting and the set of workshops at Corfu Sunbelt.
    • Bill Carroll will continue to look into affiliation to the ISA
    • We resolved that the name of the group should be "The Politics and Interlocking Directorates Research Community"
    • Dimitrios is convenor of a working group of the ECPR on "Networks", which provides funding for a conference/workshop every 2 years of 30-40 people, and a room at the ECPR annual conference. Suggests that he could look into organising a working group around politics and interlocks.
  • Power Points/Papers from Barcelona and Corfu conferences: Everyone should be encouraged to upload their own to the Politics and Interlocks Wiki/website.
  • Next Meeting: Bruce Cronin at University of Greenwich will organise the next Politics and Interlocks Conference in September in London. [Note: this seems may not happen as many people expressed the feeling that it was too soon and that we should just wait until January, when the next Sunbelt is on in Florida]
  • General Use of the Wiki: People are encouraged to use the Wiki as a form of communication and discussion
  • Bulletin Board: Josep is very keen that we establish a bulletin board/forum for questions and answers and discussions amongst the group.
  • Working Papers: Suggested that we have two sets of working papers on the website: (1) Unrefereed working papers (2) Refereed working papers.

Announcements

  • Narciso Pizarro suggested that someone contact Douglas White, as he received a grant to collect an international database on national power elites in approximately 1998-99.
  • Narciso Pizarro is currently publishing two books, one on "power" and the other on "networks". Articles dealing with finance/interlocks/politics would be welcome. They will need to be send to Narciso Pizarro within the next 6 months. One book is being published in Portuguese, the other in Spanish. Articles can be submitted in English and the editors would organise translation.
  • There will be an International Sociological Association Economy and Society Meeting in Barcelona soon and Josep has organised a session on politics and interlocks during the meeting.
